Could I try for the Atari 2600 Galaxian record?

Got an idea for an upcoming meeting? Want to see something in particular? Got suggestions? Post them here!

It's hard to explain. Endurance is not really the problem, and even paying attention is not really the problem. This game can kill in a 1,000 different ways. It's thinking ahead at times. If you miss a couple of ships in a row, now you have to start thinking a couple of steps a head. As in where is that ship that I just missed going to land, and how am I going to get out of the way safely without running into any laser blasts. The game is deceptively hard. If you go to Twin Galaxies you will see that the second place score is a little over 250,000 points. AtariAge has had this as a weekly game of the week contest for 3 different weeks, and during this time people who actually have records on the Atari 2600 struggle with this game. Very few people can even crack 100,000 points. I think I know of 4 different people myself included who have even gone over 100,000 points. Basically in order to break the record, you have to be lucky, and you have to have a Zen like focus at the time.

I did get the record, but I still would like to go for it again at the SC3. The drama of me breaking the record is gone, but I think it would still be interesting to see the game played at an expert level live if anything.

I'd really like to see some top notch gaming. I'm always down to see a record attempt.

I'd try to break my T&F record but that's next to imposible in the time provided. Even after I was fast enough it still took about 400 hours. That's a couple thousand tries in 4 months, most of them were re-starts early in the game. Only about 20 were on record pace when I reached the last event. Then one day it finally happened.

But your going for the 2600 record, not the Arcade record. Maybe I can do a console attempt too and try to beat my NES T&F record. I think that takes about 3 1/2 hours.

Sounds great! It would be nice to see multiple records broken this day! 8-) But of course the green light has not been given for this yet. So hopefully it's OK.

As I said, I doubt there will be a problem. There will be a projector screen set up on the north end of the back yard - this was playing MAME/Virtual Pinball at the last meet and Samba de Amigo at the previous meet. So there's space. I'm just waiting for the other organizers to come online and read up on this and give their input.

We also have a pair of 27" CRT sets (nice ones too).

I'm for it; it'll be nice to have a running event.

Homer: bring your own 2600, Galaxian cart, and the controller of your choice. We'll supply the TV.

I finally got my Internet connection back up so I can chime in here.

I think these record attempts are great and I can't wait to see them. Just a couple of details I want to make sure are addressed:

Can you guys supply your own VCRs and tapes to document the attempt? It sounds like homer can. How about you, Hec? Can you bring your own NES and T&F cart too? My NES is actually a Famicom and is finicky about playing American games, and the one we use on the console tables is modded, so it might invalidate the record. Basically I want to make sure we have a bonafide NES that won't flake out after running a few hours. They're not the most reliable machines.

Can anybody bring a UPS? It would not be good to have a power outage ruin a four-hour game session.
